Help UGA Get a Booth at SIEGE!

Postby codonnell » Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:38 am

You all know budgets SUCK this year at UGA. But, we have a chance to get UGA a free booth at SIEGE. If you are planning to go to SEIGE, make sure you put "Athens", "UGA", or "University of Georgia" as your "Company". If you have a company you are affiliated with, put: "Company Name, Athens."

It is my plan to showcase local game development work. That includes art, sound, engineering, design, etc. That means that the UGA booth will be a chance to demonstrate local talent in addition to what UGA is trying to build relating to games.

If we can get just 20 people to register with the above information, we get a free booth! Please reply to the forum thread if you register this way, so I can pester the SIEGE people once I believe we have enough registrants to warrant this.

Student Registration:
$45.00
or
GGDA Membership + SIEGE Registration:
$35.00 + $15.00

Thanks for your help.

Hey Casey,

I've avoid SIEGE for the past few years because their website is absolutely horrible and provides absolutely no information about who is going to be speaking, about what topics, and when. I have nothing to to go by as to whether I should give them my money and drive to Atlanta for this thing. Am I missing something? Is this information somewhere that I've overlooked?

That's a good point really. I go because its a chance to chat with some of the real developers in the area. CCP and Hi-Rez are heavy attendees, with talks typically from folks ranging from Turner (FusionFall or VPs or ...) to CCP to the ESA to GA Tech to SCAD. Every time I've gone I've enjoyed it. It isn't as great as GDC or SXSW or GDC: Austin or some other event. But, it has been productive for me. That said, paying for entrance and hotel can be a bit much for those of us not paying student rates. So I wouldn't fault you. Students really should go though...

I'd like to SIEGE and get a GGDA membership, but I'm not exactly sure where to get them. :P

Could you possibly post links to where we get these, Casey?

It's also going to depend on date(s) for SIEGE as to if I can make it or not, but I think it would be cool.

You should check out the SIEGE website. You can buy your pass there. We're currently at 5 Athens/UGA attendees, so if you're holding out, please don't! :)

Cheers.

I think the vet project should be promoted there, perhaps on a playable screen if that's feasible. Also, a slide show and/or video review of some student animations would be very appropriate. I have some final project videos my students in Animation I produced last Spring, if there is a way to display some of these.

I'll definitely have Osy there along with a controller. I'll need a volunteer to keep track of machines. I would hope that we can bring several videos and then put them on a looping slide show of some kind. If you have a nice demo reel, check this out:

We have just confirmed another great reason for students to come to SIEGE.

Students of sponsoring schools (like AIU) can submit a CD or DVD of their best game assets when they register. Our judges evaluate them for originality, professionalism, and game elements, with extra points going to complete games. Winners are announced at our town hall meeting Sunday, Oct. 4, and the best in show gets $300.

Please note that students must register for and attend SIEGE to be eligible.
